A Fresh Pair Of Eyes

So many fun things are taking place at Moonbot studios lately, music videos gigs, high profile projects, big names being dropped left and right, it is odd.
But I've got to admit the one thing I've been enjoying the most is working with our new interns, well, one animation intern only, the rest I don't work with, so unfortunate for them.
But really, joking aside, it is a real eye opening to work with fresh talents and hear the same words you once said and believed in coming out of an intern's mouth, you suddenly realize how naive you once were, how much growth you went through, how much more growing awaits you, and how little you know, about anything.
So where's this rant going? I'm offering my fresh pair of eyes to help students with their thesis work. If any of you is an animation student working on his/her thesis and would like an advice or two I'd be more than happy to take a look at your work and throw a couple of ideas your way. Post a link to your animatic/blocking in the comments section and I'll try to reply as soon as I can.

I watched Tangled

Last night I got to watch Rapunzel "Tangled". And while I never go out to watch a movie and come back home later to talk about it on my blog -due to the lack of followers and my fears of being conceived as a pretentious film snob- I feel very strongly about sharing my feelings about this movie. This is my first time doing this so hang with me.

Despite of the couple of notes I had about it the movie was very good, heart warming, engaging and RICH, I enjoyed it a good deal. The movie -in fact let me just call it FILM- the film was a fresh breath and a new start for what once was known for being the birth place of animation as we know it today.
After the many mediocre bland animated movies that came out of the mouse house the past couple of years "Tangled" felt strangely coherent and harmonious, the characters are well developed, the jokes are consciously placed, the animation was very touching and sincere and the renders reminded me of the old MGM technicolor style, I'm not sure this is what they were going for but I enjoyed it.

The music was, well let's talk about that.The music fell short to me, specially the first part of the movie, Rapunzel's songs, flat unmemorable pop culture tunes, it pissed me off.
The music scenes weren't bad but they were nothing like I expected either,what did I expect? I expected more fun and imagination, more sets and mood, I missed the graphical element, everything was taking place on the "real" set of the scene, it wasn't as creative, why? Because for many years we watched musicals done traditionally and when it comes to executing a musical visually I think that 2D is a much flexible, forgiving and imaginative medium, you don't believe me? put any musical part from the "Princess and the Frog" (Not necessarily my favorite but that's the most recent example) next to any musical part in Tangled and you'll see what I'm talking about, flatness haa? and just so I don't come across as a negative Nancy I LOVED the musical part of the mother in the forest the most, that one just worked.

Anyways, all in all the film is well worth the time and the money, yes I wanted Flynn to die cause that would have made me cry but I can imagine what that would have done to the kids in the theater, OH WELL. Congratulations to the team for all the very hard work and the very long hours they put into the making of this film, you guys restored a legacy.

My Job at Auryn

Auryn is where I currently work. For about three years this very young company has been developing a non photo-realistic (NPR) proprietary rendering technique. A couple of months ago I was brought on the team to work on creating a reel for the company. The reel is now in progress but meanwhile you can check out the companies older reel. I claim absolutely nothing in this reel, I'm just sharing it with you cause I know the look is very neat.

Thoughts and ideas

So I've been brain storming ideas for a short that I want to work on, I discovered that after work hours I needed something to keep my mind occupied, something other than my shots that animate at work to care care about and work on.
This process of thinking and brainstorming and seeking a good premise for a story revealed a couple of great thoughts about film making in general and animation in specific, these thoughts are going to be posted here to share with my friends and they really are my thoughts unless someone else beat me to one of them and did not tell me:
1- Animation is not a genre, it is a medium. Just like a painter may use oil colors or water colors or even graphite to create a painting, a film maker may use animation or live action or a mix of both to make a film.
2- Too many animators want to animate, and create what's "Funny" cause "The funnier the better" WRONG. Animation is believability and entertainment. Entertainment and not comedy or clowning around.
3- Good comedy is much harder to achieve than tragedy (Drama). Comedy is harder because in its structure comedy heavily depends on the surprise factor, the unexpected, the unforeseeable twist of setting, whereas tragedy (Drama) relies heavily on recalling painful and unpleasant memories. The difference is comedy adds something new to our experience and tragedy recalls our long stored experience.
4- Why would I want to animate this? is an outdated question, don't ever ask it cause it sounds more like that "Hey, it's 2009, what's your beeper's number please?". Don't ask what animation is good for, ask how you can utilize animation to serve your idea ,purpose and strengthen your story.
5- Due dates are crucial, and important. Make up showing dates for everything you do. A date to show a certain amount of work done to certain people cause if you don't you will keep giving yourself a time off and excuses not to work, and you are very generous when it comes to your time off.
